Take a tour of the Rising Sun Inn

Rising Sun Inn History Tour
Picture

From our 18th century Tap Room, complete with original built-in cupboards to hold the Tavern's keg and tankards, to an original "Walking" spinning wheel, to a wonderful doll house replica of the historic Jonas Green House in Annapolis, a guided tour of the Rising Sun Inn allows you to step back in time and consider a slice of colonial life in America. See the newly restored 1753 section of the second floor.  Docents will happily share their knowledge of the Inn and answer questions on your tour, helping you understand all that the Inn has done to enrich our past and inform our present.

Original wood flooring from 1753, beautiful 18th and 19th century furniture, even a fragment of homespun cloth found in the original walls, all help to illustrate the lives of an American Patriot, Henry Baldwin, his family and compatriots during the Revolutionary War. Make history come alive with this unique tour!

Architectural Tour
The Rising Sun Inn is historically significant in many ways, not the least of which is its unique structure. From March-November, weather permitting, we offer an Architectural Tour for visitors to learn more about the exterior of the Inn. This tour focuses on 18th century building methods and materials, the usefulness of the Central Hall design, and incorporation of New England Colonial features. The Rising Sun Inn is one of the few surviving colonial, framed-structures in Maryland to feature header bond brickwork in its construction, with the entire foundation resting upon English bond brickwork. A recent archaeological dig on the property has revealed more secrets of the Inn as well.

While on the tour you'll learn about Generals Washington and Rochambeau, whose troops marched along the road in front of the Inn which now bears their name (Generals Highway). Of course, the big question at the Rising Sun Inn is: "Did George Washington sleep here?"  What do you think the answer is?
We think perhaps only the 300 year old English boxwoods gracing this beautiful property can tell...
